Overview

The Crime Prevention Branch, part of Manitoba Justice, co‑ordinates crime prevention policies and programs for the Province of Manitoba. The goal is to prevent criminal behaviour before it starts by addressing the factors that put individuals, families and communities at risk, while enhancing protective factors to help prevent problem behaviours.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the Crime Prevention Unit, the Turnabout South Coordinator is responsible for managing the Turnabout South Program in Manitoba. Turnabout is a province‑wide initiative providing an integrated response and support to children under the age of 12, and their families, who have come into conflict with the law or are at‑risk of coming into conflict with the law.

The Turnabout Coordinator builds bridges among families, community groups, agencies and law enforcement to develop referral procedures, best practice activities and mechanisms to provide a collaborative effort which will provide children under 12 and their families with the support and direction needed to avoid further conflict with the law. The incumbent is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with community partners and managing grant accountability for children and youth Mentorship Programs and the Turnabout Mental Health Worker Initiative.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A Bachelor of Social Work degree or an equivalent related Social Sciences degree or equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Case management experience in the social services field.
  • Experience providing front‑line services/support to at‑risk children, youth and families.
  • Experience working with Indigenous and/or newcomer populations.
  • Knowledge of child development and other social work related theories of practice such as, but not limited to, group counselling, family counselling, strength‑based approaches and family‑centred approaches.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) or equivalent software.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills including the ability to facilitate presentations to partners and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to prepare reports and recommendations, case documentation and develop presentation materials.
  • Ability to work in a high volume, high stress work environment.

Desired

  • Experience interpreting legislation, such as the Child and Family Services Act and Youth Criminal Justice Act, as it pertains to children, youth and families involved in systems.

  • Ability to Provide and Maintain Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Ability to Provide and Maintain Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check
  • Valid Manitoba full stage Class 5 driver’s licence and access to a vehicle and the ability to travel for government business purposes
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
