About the Role

The Community Chef plays an important role in creating a welcoming, nourishing, and safe space for community members. Food is medicine, connection, and comfort — and this role helps ensure people feel cared for, respected, and supported. As the successful candidate, you are organized and enjoy planning ahead while staying flexible day‑to‑day. You are calm and grounded in fast‑paced environments, and value collaboration, clear communication, and are respectful and community‑minded.

The Community Chef prepares nutritious meals and snacks across multiple programs, supports daily programming needs, and works closely with program staff to plan menus that are practical, culturally relevant, and aligned with budget and nutrition goals. You see food as a key part of care, learning, and community connection.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Create a welcoming kitchen environment rooted in respect, and inclusion
  • Take the lead on food preparation for special events, ceremonies, workshops, and community gatherings
  • Create monthly and daily meal plans and menus that align with program needs, cultural values, and are cost effective
  • Coordinate menus across multiple programs and sites to ensure consistency, efficiency, and balanced nutrition
  • Adapt menus to meet dietary needs, allergies, food sensitivities, and cultural considerations
  • Plan menus with a strong understanding of food budgets and cost control
  • Track food spending and support budget accountability
  • Order food and kitchen supplies while minimizing waste and maximizing value
  • Maintain accurate inventory, food storage, and rotation practices
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen following all health and safety standards
  • Ensure proper food handling, labeling, and storage practices
  • Work closely with program teams to understand daily needs and upcoming activities
  • Communicate clearly with staff about menus, changes, and food availability
  • Uphold confidentiality and professionalism in shared spaces
What You Bring
  • Experience cooking for large groups in a community kitchen, program setting, shelter, or similar environment
  • Experience with menu planning and food budgeting
  • Ability to coordinate meals across multiple programs or service areas
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and kitchen safety standards
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Experience or willingness to work within harm‑reduction and trauma‑informed environments
  • Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is an asset.
Working Conditions
