Our client Sagkeeng Anicinabe Government are hiring a Niigan Aki Manager (Guardians Program Manager). Sagkeeng is comprised of Anicinabe people who have resided at or near the Fort Alexander Indian Reserve #3 located along the Winnipeg River and Traverse Bay, since time immemorial. The ancestors of the Anicinabe people of Sagkeeng signed Treaty 1 in 1871.
The role integrates environmental stewardship, cultural safeguarding, program administration, staff leadership, partnership development, and fundraising.
Some duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Responsibilities- Program Development, Coordination, and Administration – Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of land and water stewardship programs aligned with community priorities, Indigenous governance, and long‑term conservation goals.
- Environmental Stewardship, Monitoring, and Governance – Oversee environmental monitoring programs related to land, water, wildlife, ecosystems, and cultural sites.
- Community and Cultural Engagement – Ensure cultural protocols, languages, and teachings are respected and upheld in all programs. Promote intergenerational knowledge transfer through land‑based learning opportunities.
- Staff Management and Site Safeguarding – recruit and foster a safe, respectful, and culturally grounded workplace. Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards and community safeguarding policies.
- Partnership Development and Collaboration – Represent the organization in regional, provincial, and national stewardship forums. Leverage partnerships to enhance capacity, funding, and knowledge exchange.
- Fundraising, Reporting, and Accountability – Identify funding opportunities and lead proposal development for grants, contracts, and stewardship funding programs.
- Administration, Finance and Data Management – Manage program budgets, expenditures, and financial tracking in collaboration with finance staff. Oversee data collection, management, analysis, and storage in accordance with community data governance principles.
- Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and lived experience).
- Demonstrated experience working in Indigenous land and water stewardship or conservation.
- Deep land‑based knowledge and a strong commitment to community‑driven conservation and Indigenous governance.
- In‑depth understanding of First Nations cultures and protocols.
- Proven leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
- Experience managing staff, budgets, and multi‑partner projects.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in both office and field settings.
- Willingness to travel and work on the land in varying conditions.
