Overview

Job Summary: The Developmental Services Psychologist is responsible to plan, develop, organize, deliver and evaluate psychological assessments and diagnosis for Indigenous children and youth in Sioux Lookout and in the 33 First Nation Communities SLFNHA supports. Funded by Jordan’s Principal this Psychologist will have an enormous impact on the wellbeing of the children in this region by providing specialized psychological assessment, diagnosis and interventions.

Working with an interdisciplinary team the psychologist will have the opportunity to utilize psycho educational and neuropsychological testing to identify and support children and youth who have autism, FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) and other developmental disabilities.

Candidate can be located out of Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, or SLFNHA served First Nation community

2025 Salary Range: $134,485 - $196,392

Qualifications

  • PhD in Psychology from an accredited institution
  • Registered with professional body in Ontario
  • Will consider a psychological associate with a condition of employment to obtain a PsyD in a timeframe acceptable by employer
  • Prior experience administering psycho educational and neuropsychological testing
  • Minimum one year of direct clinical experience in the area Developmental disabilities and mental health
  • Supervisory/management and/or practice management experience required
  • Superb interpersonal skills and relationship building skills
  • Ability to exhibit a high level of organizational skills, prioritizing and multi-tasking skills in a highly active work environment with multiple priorities with strict deadlines
  • Critical thinking skills, innovative solutions to simple and complex issues
  • Negotiation and influencing skills; strong conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated experience or good knowledge of techniques for developing, planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation; innovative thinker
  • Ability to effect change and help teams manage effectively during change
  • Must be skilled in finance including how to create a budget and manage budgets effectively
  • Proficiency in computer, typing, word processing skills, and previous experience with EMR an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Superior data management, analytical, report and proposal writing skills
  • Extensive knowledge and assessment/counselling experience with mental health and addictions; assessing and counselling clients in areas related to high-risk, trauma, addictions, PTSD, and mental health
  • Knowledgeable of First Nations’ people, history, culture, health priorities and social issues; ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset
  • Must be willing to travel to First Nation communities when necessary, and hold a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to perform requirements of position on a regular basis

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Extensive experience with children from birth – 18 who have multiple needs
  • The ability to select appropriate assessment tools in the pediatric population, including behavioral observation, developmental disorders and cognitive disorders
  • Ability to conduct psychological Assessments using a variety of tools.
  • Excellent counselling skills
  • Experience in providing treatment to address diagnosed psychological disorders in the population served.
  • The ability to case-manage and provide comprehensive care to children and their care-givers in a manner that is respectful and considerate of cultural diversities.
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience establishing clinical guidelines and coordinating mental health programs
  • Involvement in setting up psychological clinics according to best practice
  • Ability to supervise and train as necessary students, new psychologists.
  • Capacity to assess the psychological needs of the children and communities and implement appropriate strategies to address these needs taking into consideration the geographical challenges of the communities
  • Openness to developing capacity within the communities to facilitate the delivery of services.
