Job Profile
Under the general direction of the Streets Supervisor, this position is responsible for carrying out a variety of assignments including street inspections, contract administration of snow and street construction projects, liaison and coordination of construction activities and others that require a demonstrated skill and knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the municipal streets maintenance field.
As the Technologist 2 you will:
- Perform routine street inspections, primarily on Regional Street systems and other street systems as required to determine service condition or compliance of workmanship to specifications or by-laws and documents the results for future reference.
- Inspect construction projects for adherence to specifications and by-laws and makes recommendations on final acceptance and new methods of inspection.
- Liaise with Centralized Services, area staff, and contractors to ensure maintenance activities are carried out in a timely, organized, and efficient manner.
- Provide snow and street contract administration including processing progress estimates, final quantities, extra work orders, certificates and release of bonds.
- Provide instruction to snow contractors and City crews and performs field inspection for adherence to specifications.
- Supervise the performance of the technical responsibilities of assigned junior staff as required.
- Coordinate and performs all survey duties related to the position utilizing state-of-the-art survey equipment.
- Review and coordinate drawings and specifications for construction projects.
- Utilize current computer techniques and/or custom programs.
- Prepare cost estimates, technical correspondence, reports, and conducts claims investigations.
- Assist in the preparation of the current capital estimates and 5-year capital budget.
- Provide input for the area’s responsibilities for quality standards, development of standardized work processes, evaluating and prioritizing street renewal programs and research of new maintenance techniques.
- Respond to emergent situations, customer service requests and complaints/claims.
- Review existing practices and procedures making recommendations for improvements.
- Interact with government agencies and City Councilors, various contractors and the public.
- Represent the City and the department in various circumstances such as claims, legal proceedings and/or public forums, etc.
- Participate in the Asset Management System as required.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification.
