Job ProfileThe Traffic Signals Electronic Technologist, under the supervision of the Senior Technologist, works independently on the design, construction, installation, maintenance and manufacturing of various traffic signal electrical/electronic and microcomputer controllers and devices. Approximately half of the time is spent in the shop (Traffic Lab) and the remainder in the field at intersections throughout the city.
The role requires a strong knowledge base in the traffic signal industry and the ability to modify or manufacture equipment to conform to the City’s operational standards. A solid understanding of electrical and electronic theory and safety procedures is essential for troubleshooting and emergency response.
During non‑regular hours the technologist may be required to provide maintenance as a First Responder, assemble, build equipment and create temporary controller timings and configurations, as well as modify control circuits and field wiring.
As the Traffic Signals Electronic Technologist You Will- Design, construct, install and maintain traffic signal equipment.
- Provide emergency response to traffic signal troubleshooting calls.
- Diploma from a recognized Electronic or Electrical Engineering Technologist Program.
- At least 2 years experience as an Electronic or Electrical Engineering Technologist and eligibility for CTTAM (Certified Technicians & Technologist Association of Manitoba) as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
- Experience with Microsoft Office software.
- Knowledge of solid‑state logic, integrated circuitry, and microprocessor technology and programming.
- Proficiency in electronic wiring tasks, use of hand and power tools, and familiarity with common electronic test and analysis equipment for troubleshooting.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other City departments, and the public.
- Ability to work safely with minimal supervision.
- Strong written communication skills and the ability to understand, execute, and communicate effectively.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively to staff, the public, and external agencies.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to react quickly to emergencies or rapidly changing priorities.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures applicable to the work area.
