The Teacher of the Deaf position involves teaching school subjects to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in a Kindergarten to Grade 12 bilingual-bimodal-bicultural school. It includes responsibility for instruction, learning and assessment of students following curriculum as established by the Department of Education and Advanced Learning.

This is a regular part-time (0.5) teaching position.

Qualifications
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Manitoba teaching certificate
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Bachelor of Education and formal training in Deaf and Hard of Hearing education, suitable combinations of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Experience teaching and working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience working with the Manitoba K-12 Curriculum and with modifying or adapting learning outcomes
  • Experience working with students with multiple challenges and developing Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals
  • A strong understanding of bilingual-bimodal-bicultural programming
  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • The ability to work as part of an educational team
  • Must have strong time management and organizational skills
  • Special Education Certificate
Duties

Teachers of the Deaf are responsible for teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, which may include any, or all, of the following:

  • Preparing a course outline and associated lesson plans for each assigned subject.
  • Revising texts to suit the language needs of Deaf students.
  • Work with other professionals as part of a team.
  • Maintaining daily student attendance, records of student achievement/progress and preparing report cards on a regular basis.
  • Preparing and administering academic and behavioural assessment instruments.
  • Reporting student progress to parents, administration and other staff, as required.
  • Assigning tasks to Educational Assistants when necessary and providing direction for them.
  • Preparing and implementing Individual Education Plans for students.
