Job DescriptionResponsible for direction of patient care activities in the Emergency Department. Manages staff in the Emergency Department and provides management of operational and nursing activities. Consults with staff, physicians and the Chief Nursing Officer on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Direct the Emergency Department staff and support and empower staff to embrace the hospital mission and values.
- Perform head-to-toe assessments on all patients and reassess as per policy, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric patients and the general patient population.
- Utilize the triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care; accurately assign triage categories.
- Assess and reassess pain; apply appropriate pain management techniques and educate patients and families regarding pain management.
- Monitor hemodynamic status and correctly interpret results; maintain knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
- Follow the five medication rights and reduce potential for medication errors.
- Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and provide age-appropriate care.
- Interpret data about patient status to identify age-specific needs and provide necessary care; formulate and evaluate teaching plans with family involvement when appropriate.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity; address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs.
- Serve as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers; interact professionally with patients/families in planning care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify dysrhythmias, and treat appropriately.
- Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that promotes patient safety and reduces medical errors.
- Perform waived testing (point-of-care) per Clinical Laboratory and unit policies; interpret results and take appropriate action.
- Manage and operate equipment safely; maintain department cleanliness and safety; comply with inspections; make recommendations on equipment utilization and needs.
- Communicate clearly with physicians, staff, and administrative team; coordinate and direct patient care to meet patient needs and follow hospital policy.
- Maintain adequate staff levels to meet unit requirements and state law; maintain records pertinent to personnel and department operation.
- Prepare reports regarding Emergency Department services (utilization, performance improvement, service data, outcomes, productivity, and budget considerations).
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress; maintain good working relationships within and outside the department and with community partners.
- Consult other departments to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities; maintain performance improvement activities for the department; perform competency evaluations of staff; ensure documentation meets standards and policies.
- Provide education to staff on performance improvement; plan and organize orientation and in-service training for department staff members.
