DescriptionNIGHT SHIFT and DAY SHIFT are available.
- Night shift: 7p-7a
- Day shift: 7a-7p
Provides direct and indirect patient care in the critical care setting. Communicates with physicians about changes in patients clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement and quality improvement activities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and re-assessment as per policy. This includes pediatric, adult and geriatric patient populations. Conduct risk assessments each shift (fall, aspiration, DVT, skin and malnutrition risk) with appropriate action or consult. (2 chart reviews)
- Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify dysrhythmias and treat appropriately based upon ACLS guidelines and hospital policy. (Current ACLS Provider)
- Monitor hemodynamic status and interpret results.
- Assess pain and provide individual pain management for each patient as required.
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly (e.g., central lines, PA lines, cardiac output, arterial lines, Medtronic interrogation device).
- Interpret bedside glucose tests (waIVED tests) and take appropriate actions on results. (Glucometer competency)
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition. (Current medication competency test)
- Follow the five (5) rights of medication administration to reduce medication errors and promote patient safety. (Documents correctly on the MAR)
- Understand vasoactive, anti-dysrhythmic and other IV infusions (e.g., insulin) for critically ill patients. (ICU/ER/HS annual drug competency)
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity; address psychosocial needs of patients and families.
- Formulate a discharge teaching plan based on learning needs assessed on admission; evaluate effectiveness of learning and include family as appropriate.
- Document education consistently, including heart failure education, using CPSI so other departments can review and update teaching as appropriate.
- Coordinate and direct patient care to ensure needs are met and hospital policy is followed (e.g., nutrition and diabetes consults when appropriate).
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stressful situations; revise care plans as indicated by patient response to treatment.
- Interact professionally with patient/family and involve them in formulation of the plan of care (updates in Med Act and Education documentation to demonstrate competency).
- Documentation meets current hospital standards and policies. Communicates appropriately with physicians, staff, Director of Nursing and Administrative team.
- Assist physicians with procedures in ICU and other departments; maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Consult other departments as appropriate to provide collaborative patient care and participate in performance improvement activities.
- Support Performance Improvement activities for the department and keep PI worksheets up-to-date.
- Order supplies for the unit when needed (no over-stocking). Perform Unit Clerk duties and assist with orientation and in-service training for hospital staff; participate in guidance and education programs. (Yearly competency activities)
Professional Requirements:
Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual educational requirements (mandatory MARBLED packets, annual ICU Competency Checklist, and annual ICU/ER/HS medication tests). Maintains year-round competency as required.
