Description

The Perioperative Care Technician reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. A clinically competent Technicians who works under the supervision of the RN in delivering skilled and effective direct and indirect perioperative care and all related functions.

Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain a steady level of productivity, assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment, participates in the department’s continuous quality improvement and activities.

Responsibilities
  • Provides accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers, addressing questions and concerns promptly or identifying appropriate resources.
  • Uses effective service recovery skills to solve problems or service breakdowns when they occur.
  • Uses organizational and unit/department resources efficiently.
  • Manages work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time.
  • Contributes to opportunities and processes for continuous improvement.
  • Participates in efforts to reduce costs, streamline work processes, and improve services.
  • Collaborates with the RN to assist in addressing patient safety and legal issues.
  • Clarifies with the RN special procedures or observations necessary.
  • Communicates patients’ progress and diagnostic results to RN as appropriate.
  • Reports patient data consistently, concisely, and thoroughly.
  • Documents patient care activities accurately using appropriate forms and information systems.
  • Performs required clinical skills per protocol, including vital sign measurement, aseptic technique, specimen collection, hot/cold applications, respiratory therapy, post‑mortem care, TED use, clipping, IV preparation, restocking, ambulation, toileting, and maintaining unit cleanliness.
  • Collects data for care planning, including intake, output, and vital signs.
  • Assists with admission, orientation, discharge, and transport of patients.
  • Observes patients carefully for significant changes.
  • Assists with direct patient care under RN supervision, receiving written or oral assignments and direction.
  • Maintains education records and participates in annual competencies.
  • Partners with manager to create a skill development plan for up‑to‑date patient care.
  • Provides a warm welcome to all patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Assists with house‑wide and department‑wide quality improvement activities.
Qualifications Required
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Medical terminology, proficient in English, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
  • Physical demands: lift/carry up to 70 lbs, push/pull up to 50 lbs.
Preferred
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draws, EKG, glucoscans.
  • Nursing Assistant Certification.
