Overview
JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for providing patient care, including escorting patients to exam rooms, conducting interviews, measuring vital signs, performing treatments, and administering medication as directed. The role requires accurate and efficient recordkeeping/documentation, scheduling patient testing and referrals, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines. The Medical Assistant must possess good written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational abilities, and the flexibility to respond to rapidly changing patient needs.
FUNCTIONS
Job Functions
- Patient Care: Assure smooth, timely patient flow by escorting patients to exam rooms; interview patient, measure vital signs, and document all information in patient’s chart/EHR; perform treatments, tests, or procedures; administer medication as directed; assist Physician/Nurse Practitioner as directed.
- Recordkeeping/Documentation: Accurately and efficiently report/document patient care/status/information in the medical record; receive patient record(s) from external sources (Diagnostic Testing, Physicians, Consults, etc.) and refer to Physician/Nurse Practitioner for review.
- Customer Service: Responsible for screening and handling incoming telephone calls as directed; schedule patient testing, consult, and/or referrals; provide patient/family teaching necessary for continuing care during and after discharge; maintain supplies necessary for quality patient care.
- Education: Participate in performance improvement activities (EXCEL).
- Regulatory: Adhere to NMHS/NMMC and Departmental Policies/Procedures/Guidelines; comply with applicable State/Federal regulations/laws/policies/procedures/guidelines.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent or equivalent. Required
Licenses and Certifications
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)-NCTT. Upon Hire. Required Or
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)-AAMA. Upon Hire. Required Or
- Registered Medical Assistant. Upon Hire. Required
Work Experience
- 1-3 years. Minimum of 1 year experience in a healthcare related field. Preferred
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of various medical terminology; required
- Knowledge of Electronic Health Record Systems; preferred
- Must maintain CPR Certification (American Heart Association-AHA); required
- Good written and verbal communication skills; required
- Excellent organizational skills; required
- Working knowledge of basic computers and computer software; required
- Interaction with a patient population of all ages ranging from neonates to geriatrics, required
- Professionalism and personal integrity; must demonstrate
- Ability to organize and prioritize work flow
- Flexibility and openness to change
- Assures compliance with regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines
- Works independently as well as in a team setting
- Extensive contact with: patients, family members, RN’s, NP’s, Physicians, and other RHC staff members
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Positive, caring attitude toward clients, patients, staff and the public we serve
