The Decisions and Pricing Foundations team owns the foundational aspect of the Underwriting Engine, architecting, modernizing, and optimizing affirm’s underwriting capabilities to serve an ever increasing number of consumers and merchants while maintaining high availability and excellent economics.
What You'll Do
Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open‑ended problems and ensuring everyone is supported throughout delivery.
Collaborate with product management, design, analytics, and stakeholders during the product development lifecycle, articulating technical constraints and partnering on decisions that consider risks and trade‑offs.
Proactively identify project, process, technology, or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them.
Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” and on‑call efforts.
Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond your team through writing and technical talks.
Help develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.
What We Look For
4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
A track record of building highly available distributed systems with technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
Familiarity with processing data offline using frameworks such as Spark or Ray.
Knowledge of stream‑processing architectures and the ability to bridge online and offline systems with hybrid designs.
Experience defining a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple, and extensible design.
Ability to write high‑quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
Proficiency in making significant changes in a large codebase, with a suite of tools and practices that enable safe evolution.
Ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
Pay Grade – N
Equity Grade – 6
Employees new to affirm typically start at the beginning of the pay range. affirm focuses on a simple and transparent pay structure incorporating location, experience, and job‑related skills. Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, as well as benefits such as 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents.
Employees may also be eligible for equity rewards offered by affirm holdings, inc. (parent company).
CAN base pay range per year: $150,000 – $200,000

A limited number of roles remain office‑based due to the nature of their job responsibilities.
