Introduction
The Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) invites experienced and skilled candidates to apply for the position of Qualified Craft Worker (Plumbing and Steamfitting) at Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position in the Airport’s Building Maintenance Unit with work hours 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Please note that there will be an initial training period of approximately three months on the first shift, during which the working hours will be 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday-Friday.
A valid P1 (Unlimited Plumbing Contractor) or P2 (Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber) License is preferred. Please be sure to indicate your license number, class, expiration date and issuing state in the 'Licenses and Professional Certificates' section of your application.

Your Role: In this role, you’ll ensure the reliability of key systems that keep the airport experience seamless and comfortable for every traveler. This position is responsible for safely and efficiently performing high-skilled plumbing/steam-fitting tasks involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of various interior and exterior plumbing related building components.
This includes but is not limited to:
Domestic, sanitary and drainage utilities and garage floor drainage systems;
Fixtures and water heaters;
Line snaking/jetting, well water systems, oil/water & wastewater holding equipment, natural gas supply lines and pneumatic compressors and associated plumbing. You will also:
Repair and replace dry/wet sprinkler systems and components;
Disassemble, clean, overhaul and rebuild valves, pumps, filters, and other pumping systems;
Conduct monthly churn test on two fire pumps;
Maintain all records pertaining to inspections and repairs on the sprinkler system;
Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve plumbing problems typical to commercial and industrial buildings. Additionally, you will work with other trades as required in the repair and maintenance of HVAC and fuel dispensing equipment.
Position Requirements: One hour response time when called into work. As an essential employee, there is an emergency operations assignment supporting equipment and facilities whenever services are needed, to include days, weekends and holidays. This position requires a valid driver’s license. An individual serving in this position must be able to successfully undergo a thorough background and security screening, physical examination including pre-employment drug screening, fingerprinting and maintain required security clearance during the duration of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices;
Skills interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills;
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records; utilize computer software.
Minimum Qualifications
- General
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
- Special
Experience:
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.
Note:
For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.
- Substitutions Allowed:
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience. At the University of Connecticut:
Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management. At other state agencies:
Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience. Experience performing technical duties within the plumbing and steamfitting trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications: P2 or P1 plumbing license. Experience snaking out drains and resolving water and waste backups, as well as grease traps. Experience in the maintenance and repair of fire sprinkler systems. Experience servicing multiple commercial/industrial…
