The State of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) is seeking a Qualified Craft Worker (Plumbing and Steamfitting) to maintain the University grounds, including snow removal, events, and the athletic fields.

Position Highlights
  • Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week
  • Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Preference may be given to current BOR/CSCU employees and/or current State of CT employees.
Job Responsibilities
  • Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices and codes.
  • Assemble, install, and repair air, gas, water, steam, and sewer disposal systems.
  • Cut, bend, ream, and thread pipes.
  • Caulk and test joints.
  • Install and repair gas, water, steam, and sanitary fixtures.
  • Cover and insulate tanks, pipes, and related objects.
  • Work with high‑pressure hot water and steam systems.
  • Perform minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks.
  • Add water‑treatment chemicals to boilers.
  • Make estimates of time, personnel, and determine and obtain required materials on assigned tasks.
  • Keep necessary records.
  • May braze pipes.
  • May inspect and repair steam traps and/or vaults fed by the main system at various locations.
  • May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA‑approved methods.
  • May inspect and repair medical gas systems.
  • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
  • May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
  • May operate heavy equipment.
  • May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state‑owned airports.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
  • Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
  • At the University of Connecticut:
    Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.
  • At other state agencies:
    Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
  • Experience performing technical duties within the plumbing and steamfitting trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven experience working in commercial and industrial plumbing systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair of piping, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Familiarity with plumbing requirements in food service environments, such as kitchens, cafeterias, and food prep areas, with knowledge of sanitation and health codes.
  • Experience servicing multi‑story high‑occupancy dwellings, including apartment buildings, dormitories, or office complexes, with an understanding of vertical plumbing systems and pressure management equipment.
  • Must have a P‑1 or a P‑2 license.
Special Requirements
  • Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications, including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut plumbing and pipe fitting license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
Physical Requirements
  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.
