Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all criminal matters in the State. The Division includes the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in Rocky Hill and the Offices for each of the thirteen Judicial Districts.

About this Position

We are recruiting for one full‑time Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney or Apprentice Prosecutor position for the Windham GA11 in Danielson, CT. The position is a 40‑hour work week, Monday‑Friday, with core hours 8:00 a.m.‑5:00 p.m.

Salary Information: Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney $93,275 annually;
Apprentice Prosecutor $44.67 per hour. Position number 5266.

The Role

A prosecutor is a high public official ethically bound to seek impartial justice for the guilty and the innocent, faithful to the law and impartial enforcement.

As a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney: Must be an attorney at law, member of the Connecticut Bar in good standing, have completed a background check, and be appointed by the Criminal Justice Commission. Travel may be required.

As an Apprentice Prosecutor: Any law student within five months of graduation and a certified legal intern may be appointed; must be admitted to the Connecticut Bar within one year of graduation. Background check required; travel may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Review documentation for assigned criminal cases and infractions; direct supplemental investigation.
  • Prepare cases for arraignment, select charges, prepare original statement of facts.
  • Respond to defense motions and prepare objections.
  • Interview witnesses and victims.
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of cases.
  • Conduct legal research; negotiate pleas with defense attorneys.
  • Conduct pre‑trial conferences, jury selection, and trial before juries, panels, or judges.
  • Proofread arrest warrant applications and present to judge for review and signature.
  • Maintain liaison with state and local police.
  • Advise victims of crimes on rights and direct them to supportive agencies.
  • Defend petitions of habeas corpus, prepare pleadings, argue motions, and conduct trials.
  • For appellate unit members, defend appeals before Appellate Court and Supreme Court.
  • Prepare appellate materials for Chief State’s Attorney’s Office after convictions.
  • Review applications for search and seizure warrants.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of state and federal criminal law, legal processes, and DCJ operations.
  • Interpersonal, negotiating, trial, counseling, oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to analyze legal problems and present statements of fact, law, and argument.
  • Ability to write legal briefs and supporting documents.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney: attorney at law, member of Connecticut Bar in good standing.
  • Apprentice Prosecutor: law student within five months of graduation, certified legal intern, admitted to Connecticut Bar within one year.
