EDU 413 Methods in Elementary Science (in-person course meetings: Thursdays, 7:00pm-9:45pm) 3 credits
This course is taken by undergraduate-level teacher certification candidates in elementary education.
Course description:
In this course, you will have the opportunity to experience an integrated approach to the teaching of science. Both the theoretical and the practical aspects of teaching will be explored, and curriculum materials developed based upon common concepts. Curricular materials, teaching strategies, and classroom procedures will be examined, and the skills required for teaching science will be developed. You will be engaging in a field experience for a three-hour block each week and will be assigned a variety of lessons and experiences for each course component of Core III.
Qualifications:
Master of Science degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in a science (or related) field, or Elementary Education with an undergraduate degree in science; doctoral degree or ABD near completion is preferred. Preferred:
Active CT teacher certification in grades PreK-6 (#305); candidates with secondary (i.e., grades 4-12) science certification will also be considered. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
* Teach 3-credit course on campus consistently during the scheduled time;
* Prepare lectures, projects, homework, assessments, and other student assignments that align with the course syllabus;
* Grade all student work in a timely manner;
* Provide appropriate feedback to students to promote academic success;
* Learn and use technology resources offered at Eastern to facilitate teaching;
* Monitor Eastern email and respond to inquiries within a reasonable time;
* Comply with all departmental requirements; and
* Provide an atmosphere that supports student success.
EDU 549 Issues and Application in Secondary BIO/EES (in-person course meetings: Thursdays, 4:00pm-6:45pm) 3 credits
This course is taken by graduate-level teacher certification candidates in secondary education.
Course description:
This course is designed as a science methods class for future secondary science teachers. The goal is to prepare each student/future science teacher to succeed in the classroom (from clinical experiences through student teaching and the first five years of teaching) as a secondary science teacher. The focus is on middle and high school science classrooms and identifying attributes of teaching and learning science that are critical to effective instruction.
This course is designed to support preservice teachers in effectively planning and engaging students in activity that is authentic to the discipline of science, with a focus on the 4 core sets of teaching practices embodied in Ambitious Science Teaching (AST). These core sets of practices are: (1) Planning for engagement with important science ideas, (2) Eliciting students' ideas, (3) Supporting ongoing changes in thinking, and (4) Pressing for evidence-based explanations.

Active CT teacher certification in Secondary Science Education, Grades 4-12; candidates with elementary certification and a strong science background will also be considered. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
