EDU 537 Science in Elementary School (in-person course meetings: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30pm-9:45pm) 3 credits

This course is taken by graduate-level teacher certification candidates in elementary education.

Course description:
The course facilitates reflective thinking and professional problem-solving in participants. The course will be devoted to the enrichment of science teaching in the elementary school through knowledge of science, student learning, and action research and will concern examination of basic issues and interrelationships involved in the effective teaching of science.

Qualifications:

Master of Science degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in a science (or related) field, or Elementary Education with an undergraduate degree in science; doctoral degree or ABD near completion is preferred. Preferred:
Active CT teacher certification in grades PreK-6 (#305); candidates with secondary (i.e., grades 4-12) science certification will also be considered. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

* Teach 3-credit course on campus consistently during the scheduled time;

* Prepare lectures, projects, homework, assessments, and other student assignments that align with the course syllabus;

* Grade all student work in a timely manner;

* Provide appropriate feedback to students to promote academic success;

* Learn and use technology resources offered at Eastern to facilitate teaching;

* Monitor Eastern email and respond to inquiries within a reasonable time;

* Comply with all departmental requirements; and

* Provide an atmosphere that supports student success.
