Overview
The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing nursing skills to carry out the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation and time management. The nurse is responsible for quality communication, teamwork and leadership/professionalism. They direct, coordinate and implement patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

Responsibilities- A Registered Nurse I (RN I) is responsible for the care of the population they are assigned.
- Complete yearly mandatory competencies and any unit-specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee related to the patient population of their unit.
- Complete the Professional Practice Ladder requirements, including assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, PI Activity and department initiatives; communicate and share information with the Director/Designee and co-workers from unit or hospital committees, Valley Health paid Education/Seminar/Conference, workshop or Nursing Article.
- Maintain and submit a current Portfolio to the Director/Designee annually by March 1st.
- Solicit and validate patient/family satisfaction; participate in peer review for the unit; and develop bulletin boards or posters that provide educational information to staff/patients/family members.
- Associates Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN or ADN) is required.
- Bachelors Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
- RN License is required. Must be licensed or eligible to practice in Virginia with either a multi-state license (Nurse Licensure Compact) or a Virginia single-state license, as applicable.
- BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have AHA certification prior to completion of orientation.
- Relevant Specialty Certification is preferred.
- Competent in providing care based on cognitive, physical, emotional and developmental stages of human growth.
- Competent to provide care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
- Must have a reliable means of phone communication with the hospital.
- If starting as an RN I in Virginia, secure an Eligibility to Test Letter (or interim verification) from the Virginia Board of Nursing; if residing in a Compact state other than Virginia, obtain home state license with multi-state privileges before commencing RN employment as an RN I.
