** Under direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Intermediate Pharmacy Technician accurately prepares and labels medications (including sterile compounds, such as chemotherapy, high risk and batch preparations), fills automated dispensing devices, squad boxes, code trays and replaces floor stock. The Intermediate Pharmacy Technician fills and exchanges patient-specific medication supplies, monitoring for returned and discontinued medications. In addition, the Intermediate Technician functions routinely in specialty positions (Precepting, Procedural Area inventory/replenishment, Controlled Substance security and inventory).

The technician is responsible for maintaining a safe and clean work environment and communicating in support of Valley Health values.

Duties include:

Sterile Compounding – The Intermediate Technician is able to competently perform all steps of chemotherapy, high risk and batch product preparation, including selection, compounding and appropriately labeling ordered products for check by a pharmacist, prioritizing as needed. Prepares and labels adult, NICU and pediatric sterile preparations as needed to fulfill patient orders and avoid stock-outs. Documents all compounding and preparation activities as required prior to check by a pharmacist.

Follows procedures stipulated in USP 797, USP 800 and Pharmacy policies and procedures for sterile compounding. Consistently compounds products accurately, with close attention to stability and cost issues. Successfully demonstrates competency for sterile compounding annually. Completes all required cleaning and quality assurance processes and documents appropriately.
Fulfills Responsibilities of at Least Two Specialized 2 Shift Assignments (C-2 SAFE/Controlled Substances, Procedural Area, or Preceptor) - Accurately and completely fulfills job responsibilities as outlined in workflows or orientation checklists. Mentors and assists staff for increased efficiency and service to patient care areas.
Order Processing and Drug Distribution - Continually selects and appropriately labels ordered medications for check by a pharmacist, prioritizing as needed. Prepares oral adult, NICU and pediatric preparations into unit dose packaging as needed to fulfill patient orders and avoid stock-outs. Documents all compounding and prepacking activities as required prior to check by a pharmacist. Answers all telephone calls within specified time period, using appropriate customer service skills.

Triages calls for technician or pharmacist intervention and follows through in an appropriate manner. Verifies correct supply of medications and intravenous medications delivered to the patients’ respective nursing unit daily. Screens for expired or discontinued medications, drugs requiring transfer or doses still to be administered that should remain on the unit. Arranges activities to meet designated turnaround times for STAT and routine orders.

Manages robot and Pyxis fills, completing scanning process to assure accurate doses reach the patient and maintain an accurate inventory level. Completes processes within designated times and facilitates pharmacist checks. Resolves or reports all discrepancies. Completes risk reports to improve processes.
Communication - Continuously communicates workload status to fellow team members. Keeps the pharmacist-on-duty informed of all workload issues as well as customer concerns. Coordinates with pharmacist-on-duty all work and meal breaks. Effectively communicates workload status between shifts.
