Job Description

R J Bull Limited is seeking a motivated individual to join our specialist environmental contracting team, with the opportunity to develop a long-term career within the river, wetland and habitat enhancement works we deliver. We place greater value on enthusiasm, commitment and a genuine interest in the natural environment than on existing experience.

This role may suit someone looking to build on current land-based or construction experience, or an individual seeking a paid “learn-as-you-work” opportunity within the environmental sector. Extensive practical and theoretical training will be provided, including the safe operation of specialist plant and machinery. You will support the delivery of a wide range of projects, from small-scale enhancement works to complex, multi-disciplinary schemes.

The role is physically demanding and requires a strong focus on health, safety and environmental best practice, which are central to how R J Bull operates on site. You will be based in the Winchester area, but project work is carried out across the UK, and travel and occasional overnight stays will be required. Over time, we are looking for the successful candidate to develop into a key member of the site team, with progression into a team leader role.

You will be involved in the practical delivery of high-quality environmental enhancement projects, including river restoration, wetland creation and habitat improvement works. All work is carried out in accordance with strict health, safety and environmental standards, and you will receive ongoing training and mentoring to support your development. This role would particularly suit someone wishing to move from a more conventional land-based role into a career focused on conservation, restoration and environmental improvement.

Work at R J Bull is varied, hands-on and highly rewarding, offering the opportunity to see tangible, positive outcomes for the environment and a strong sense of achievement upon project completion.

The standard working week is 45 hours, with additional hours required during key stages of projects. Occasional weekend working may be necessary. This is a full-time position, although a flexible approach to working hours can be considered where practicable.

Key Responsibilities & Requirements:
  • A passion to pursue this type of career.
  • Be willing to learn and engage fully with project delivery and other team members.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and troubleshooting.
  • Follow project plans, guidance and specifications to complete tasks accurately and safely.
  • Engage in physical labour as necessary to support project goals.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams to meet deadlines and quality standards.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies.
  • Travel to various project sites as needed.
Personal Requirements:
  • Polite and the ability to perform physical tasks when required.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home if required (current requirements vary but can be 6 to 10 weeks/year).
  • Valid UK driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as a Machinery Operator, excavators, dumpers wheeled & tracked, chainsaw, telehandler etc although qualifications are desirable training will be given if required to achieve competency in operations that suit your skill set.
  • Additional qualifications or certifications in machinery operation and first aid.
  • Experience in river and wetland restoration, construction, working in and around water and pond and lake construction, again training will be provided.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and environmental regulations.
What We Offer:
  • Competitive salary and benefits package depending on experience.
  • 28 days paid leave.
  • 45 hour standard week.
  • Overtime will be payable for additional hours and weekend working when required.
  • Access to company pool vehicles or provision of a company vehicle dependent on experience.
  • Opportunities for professional…
