About The Job – Your Role

The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) seeks Registered Nurses with a passion for caring for marginalized and underserved incarcerated individuals. This role emphasizes continuity of care, professional autonomy, and making a real difference in a correctional setting. The ODOC patient population has significant mental health and substance use needs, and nursing staff provide evidence-based care, health education, and advocacy.

Your primary responsibility will be to provide health care services to individuals living in ODOC correctional facilities. Primary tasks include:

  • Direct Patient Care:
    Provide nursing care including patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, care planning, medication administration, laboratory/medical procedures, and treatment in accordance with ODOC policies, procedures, protocols, provider orders, and evidence-based standards of care.
  • Coordination of Care:
    Schedule on-site and community-based services to ensure optimal patient health outcomes.
  • Communication:
    Provide comprehensive patient education and serve as a resource for non-medical staff. Advocate for patient care needs to ensure timely care in the correctional environment.
  • Documentation:
    Maintain accurate, legible, and complete records of patient care, including requests for medical attention, data collected, treatments provided, and education delivered.
  • Administrative:
    Coordinate nursing activities with other departments. May assume unit operations in the absence of management staff. Monitor medical supplies, ensure adequate quantities, and maintain secure storage and counting of narcotics, needles, and syringes.

This position is represented by AFSCME and may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through PERS, as defined by statute.

Minimum Qualifications

Possess a valid Oregon Registered Professional Nurse's License at the time of appointment. Preference given to candidates with an unencumbered license.
