The hiring range for this position is $63,748.69 (minimum salary) to $87,791.62 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications.

The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the repair and maintenance of all fire department equipment, vehicles, and apparatus. Success in this position ensures the availability of safe and reliable fire and emergency equipment. The work consists of varied duties in repair and maintenance of fire equipment. The large volume of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the work.

Major

Duties

Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of medium and heavy duty fire apparatus (pumpers) and aerial fire truck hydraulic systems; repairs, overhauls and maintains specialized fire apparatus equipment; overhauls, fabricates and services assemblies and accessories such as engines, transmissions, transfer cases, fire pumps, fire pump plumbing, hydraulic systems, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components; operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices;

performs preventive maintenance as required; provides assistance to fire equipment operators during emergencies; maintains files and records on apparatus; performs body and chassis modifications; responds to fire alarms and performs field maintenance as required.

Guidelines

Guidelines include knowledge of The Wilson Fire Rescue Services departmental standard operating procedures, City of Wilson ordinances and policies, manufacturer instructor manuals, and federal, state, and local laws. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

Possession of any diploma or certification equivalent to graduation from high school.

Knowledge

Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association codes and standards for construction, design, repairs and records for fire apparatus. Ability to perform adjustments of a wide variety of specialized heavy fire equipment and pumps; thorough knowledge of the usual types of automotive tools and equipment, as well as the special tools, gauges, machinery and shop equipment used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of fire apparatus and specialized equipment;

ability to detect by inspection any worn, defective or improperly adjusted part of the assembly; ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep records of repair and service operations.

Other Requirements

Possession and ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina CDL Driver’s License Class B with Hazardous Materials Endorsement;
North Carolina Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector Certificate;
Master Fire Apparatus Technician Certificate from the Emergency Vehicle Certification commission, Inc.;
Air Condition refrigerant recovery and recycling certificate; thorough knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association codes and standards for dealing with fire apparatus, specifications, maintenance, records, service tests, aerial tests, and acceptance tests. Must maintain a CPR certification.

The work is typically performed in a garage, stockroom, or warehouse, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. Work is performed in a very noisy environment. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, hearing protection, and gloves.

The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
