Description

The Plant Engineering BAS Sr. Technician works daily with the Plant Engineering BAS Lead, Utilities Manager, and Utilities Technicians to support HVAC, Controlled Temperature Units, GMP and non‑GMP systems, as well as Energy Center equipment. This role focuses on hands‑on troubleshooting, repair, and routine operation of Building Automation System (BAS)–controlled equipment and associated utilities.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Support Plant Engineering Utility Operations and Maintenance teams with day‑to‑day tasks to help ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of utility systems.
  • Perform routine monitoring, basic configuration changes, and simple troubleshooting of the Building Automation System (BAS) under direction from the BAS Administrator/Engineering.
  • Assist with BAS‑related activities such as:
    • Implementing pre‑defined control changes
    • Entering and updating data points
    • Generating and reviewing system alarms and trend data
    • Providing data to support Quality Events
  • Assist with maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of HVAC and utility equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Chillers, Boilers, Air Handling Units (AHUs), Humidifiers/Dehumidifiers
    • VFDs (ABB, Allen Bradley, and others)
    • PLCs (Allen Bradley, Siemens, and others), Square D controllers and monitors
  • Support updating of HVAC drawings and documentation by providing field verification and redlines, coordinate with in‑house resources and contractors for repairs.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance (PM) tasks and calibrations based on existing work instructions and procedures; provide feedback to improve PMs.
  • Conduct basic air and water balancing tasks and assist with data collection for heat load and system performance evaluations.
  • Assist in developing and revising technical documents (e.g., SOPs, checklists, forms) under guidance from engineers or senior staff.
  • Support training activities by:
    • Demonstrating equipment operation and basic troubleshooting techniques to team members
    • Sharing system knowledge gained through daily work
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, calibration data, and other critical GMP documentation.
  • Participate in internal and external audits by:
    • Locating and providing requested documentation
    • Explaining routine maintenance and operational activities within area of responsibility.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and GMP procedures while performing work; promptly report issues and support corrective actions.
Education

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
    • 5 years of utility, HVAC, or BAS maintenance experience; or
    • Two‑year technical degree (e.g., HVAC, Instrumentation, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Technology) with 3 years maintenance experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience And Skills
  • Hands‑on experience with HVAC and/or utility systems in an industrial, pharmaceutical, or similar regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems (e.g., Siemens or similar) with demonstrated ability to:
    • Navigate graphics
    • Review alarms and trends
    • Perform simple point or command changes
  • Demonstrated BAS, HVAC, and instrumentation troubleshooting skills at a technician level.
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • Electrical and Mechanical Blueprints
    • P&IDs
    • Basic control loop diagrams
  • Working experience with steam, compressed air, refrigeration, and water systems (generation, distribution, and control).
  • Basic computer skills, including use of:
    • Microsoft Windows
    • Email
    • Word processing and spreadsheet applications (e.g., Word, Excel)
  • Effective documentation skills with attention to accuracy and compliance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, communicate clearly with peers and supervisors, and prioritize tasks.
  • Willingness to work in GMP and non‑GMP areas and follow established change control and quality procedures.
Preferred Experience And Skills
  • Experience working within GMP environments and knowledge of documentation and change control expectations.
  • Prior experience with Siemens BAS platforms (Insight, Desigo CC, and Info Center).
  • Experience supporting audits or inspections.
