Lineboat Deckhand – On‑call

Join Lineboat Deckhand – On‑call at Moran Towing Corporation (O.E. Durant, Inc.). Casual relief, hourly, non‑exempt. Based in Wilmington, NC / Charleston, SC. Strongly preferred that candidates live within a 10‑mile radius due to the on‑call nature of the job.

Position Summary

As a valued member of line‑handling operations, you will handle lines on line boats, piers, and docks, ensuring safe mooring and unmooring of foreign and domestic vessels. You will participate in all safety and environmental programs, emergency drills, and deliver “First Class” service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Follow the Company’s Safety Management System and report unsafe situations.
  • Assist the Captain in pre‑sail safety checks and routine inspections.
  • Run lines to berth or turn vessels, and assist with cargo transfer.
  • Deliver pallets or goods via launch service.
  • Maintain vessel cleanliness and perform maintenance tasks.
  • Communicate accurately and professionally with crew and terminal staff.
  • Act as a lookout and demonstrate thorough familiarity with vessel equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid TWIC.
  • Strong marine background; experience on commercial vessels preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude for operating vessel/machinery/equipment.
  • Ability to read, speak, and understand English over radio and telephone.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and adherence to Driver Safety Policy.
  • Knowledge of cargo information cards and MSDS.
  • Basic computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Willingness to learn basic seamanship skills (splicing, rigging, lifting).
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Good judgment for problem solving.
  • Adaptable to a variety of schedules, including on‑call, weekends, holidays, evenings.
Physical Demands
  • Climb ladders and board/disembark boats safely.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Frequently reach with hands and arms.
  • Safe navigation in marine setting.
  • Speak, hear, and see in noisy environments.
  • Occasionally crouch or stoop.
  • Lift or carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Withstand exposure to heat, rain, cold, humidity.
