Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele float pool position in an ED holding unit with night shifts and significant floating requirements.
Responsibilities
• Work in the ED holding area within the Emergency Department as part of the float pool
• Care for adult patients with any medical/surgical diagnosis, including Med/Surg, Telemetry, and occasional PCU-level cases
• Target ratios are 1:7 for Med/Surg Tele patients and 1:4 for PCU-level patients
• Floating required to ED, Med Surg areas, and potentially to affiliate hospitals based on skill set and census
• Night shift schedule with 36 or 48 hours per week, and every other weekend required
• Ratios and scheduling managed by unit manager; contracts of 13–26 weeks accepted
• Uses standard hospital equipment including cardiac monitors and IV pumps
• Documentation and medication systems include Epic, Pyxis, and SBAR
• Navy scrubs required
• Serve in a high-acuity, mixed-level holding unit for patients awaiting inpatient beds within the ED
• Expected to work as part of a Storm Team or Hurricane Team during emergency situations and may be reassigned based on hospital needs
• Unit orientation is 12 hours with additional required modules to be completed pre-start and annually
• First-time travelers are accepted
• Travelers cannot work more than 5 consecutive days or exceed 60 hours per week due to fatigue policy
• Previous staff at specified health systems must wait 12 months before reapplying as a traveler
• Local candidates are accepted at a different pay rate for addresses within 50 miles
Requirements
• Active NC or compact RN license required at time of start
• Minimum 2 years of recent Med/Surg Tele experience
• Certifications required: BLS and ACLS
•
Skills required:
telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, rapid response, colostomy and feeding tube care, renal failure management, blood product administration, PICC line management, phlebotomy, heparin and insulin management, isolation precautions, chest tube management, oral suctioning, and non-invasive airway management
• Must pass EKG testing prior to start
• Epic charting experience required
• Maximum 7 days of RTO permitted; must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
• Must be comfortable with full floating requirements within hospital and to affiliate hospitals
