Overview

The Grief Counselor provides professional grief counseling and education to patients; caregivers and families of patients; and community clients. The Grief Counselor provides education regarding grief and loss, and grief support groups to families of patients and the community, including facilities and vendors. The population served by the Grief Counselor may range from children to older adults. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Grief Counselor provides consultation with IDT members about grief and loss issues, and participates in the initial assessment for grief services when needed.

The Grief Counselor is responsible for continuing their personal development to enhance practice. Performs other duties as assigned.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Assesses, develops appropriate care plans, and provides grief counseling and education services requested by the patient, patient’s identified family, and community clients in compliance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with IDT members when requested to provide anticipatory grief counseling and education.
  • Plans and implements community grief education events, grief groups, and grief support activities.
  • Plans and implements memorial services for clients, external vendors, and hospice personnel in coordination with other LCFL team members.
  • Provides bereavement services to staff and residents in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, continuum of care facilities, and ICF/MR facilities.
  • Organizes and performs work effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintains and adjusts schedule to enhance team performance.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with all members of the team.
  • Maintains and promotes customer satisfaction.
  • Effectively demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of Lower Cape Fear Life Care on a daily basis.
Job Specifications
  • Education:

    Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field preferred. Bachelor’s degree in one of these fields is required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Specialized training or post-degree education in grief and loss preferred.
  • Licensure /

    Certifications:

    Licensure to practice independently recommended (e.g., LCSW, LPC, etc.), but not required.
  • Experience:

    At least two years of professional experience, preferably in a healthcare or counseling setting.
