Senior Police Supervisors (Lieutenants) serve as administrative guides for their direct reports, provide backups for supervisory staff, and handle functional responsibilities such as special‑events planning, hiring and recruitment, training, or other duties. Lieutenants may supervise sergeants on a uniform patrol shift, lead a squad in their absence, coordinate administrative functions, and serve in an on‑call capacity for Command on Call based on assignment.
As senior police supervisors, Lieutenants must be able to manage schedules, evaluate direct reports, prepare and recommend development plans, provide coaching, discipline, and commendations. They must plan operations, make assignments, respond to public inquiries, and intake complaints. Lieutenants are resources to their direct reports and provide oversight to ensure compliance with policy, law, and local regulations. They must also support an assigned unit in its duties, carrying a case load, responding to calls, emergencies, crimes, working special events, and other non‑supervisory tasks as necessary.
Sworn police personnel may be deployed or requested to assist in the field based on operational needs and may fulfill other law‑enforcement or administrative duties as assigned.
All sworn police officers are essential personnel for inclement weather and emergencies and may be required to work overtime depending upon circumstances and special events.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 6 years of sworn law‑enforcement officer experience or an associate degree and 8 years of sworn law‑enforcement officer experience.
- At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater.
- Some experience working within a campus environment.
- North Carolina Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission, or the ability to achieve lateral transfer certification within one year of employment.
