Overview

The Wilmington Fire Department is hiring Fire Engineers. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property of the citizens of Wilmington. Serves as second in command to the Company Officer; implementing, directing, and conducting tasks at emergency scenes and the fire station. May assume the lead in the absence of the Company Officer and carry out supervisory responsibilities;

maintaining documents; and maintaining training and knowledge of firefighting principles and practices. Provides for the safe response of the firefighting apparatus and personnel to fire and EMS alarms. May temporarily assume the role of incident commander (Safety Officer, RIT Member, or Accountability Officer) at emergency scenes. Performs all other duties as assigned and/or as necessary at the discretion of the Battalion Chief.

Selection Components

The selection process includes the Career Plan Report, WFD Candidate School, Testing Phases, and an interview. Specific dates and scoring are provided below.

  • Career Plan Report: Documents the candidate's professional growth, including Experience, Formal Education, Professional Development, and Organizational Commitment, aligned with requirements in the Promotion Process Engineer/Lieutenant/Captain/Battalion Chief/Assistant Chief.
  • WFD Candidate School: All candidates must attend one of the sessions to qualify. Attendance is recorded at the beginning of the meeting.
  • Testing Phases: Candidates who pass minimum qualification screenings proceed through the phases with specified scoring. Details include Phase I, Phase II, Phase III, Phase IV, and required passing scores to advance.
  • Final List: Cumulative scores determine final ranking. A candidate scoring below 70% at any phase or overall will not be eligible for the final list. The eligibility roster expires one calendar year from certification. For external candidates selected for hire, the anticipated Engineer orientation date is May 4, 2026.

  • Serve as second in command by implementing, directing, and conducting tasks at emergency scenes and the fire station; may assume the lead in the absence of the Company Officer; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and laws.
  • Assist Company Officer in preparing reports, demonstrating knowledge of required forms and timely/accurate completion.
  • Drive, maintain, spot, and operate fire apparatus; secure water supply and support safety and operations on emergency scenes.
