Overview

Police Supervisor - I, II or III (Sergeant)

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) offers a comprehensive benefits package and programs designed to support work/life balance for full-time employees, including health, dental, vision insurance, retirement benefits, tuition waivers, campus wellness programs, training and development opportunities, and more.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary objective of the UNCW Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment within which students, faculty, and staff can live, learn, and work. Officers within the department are duly sworn, certified, and empowered with the same authority as other local law enforcement officers in the State of North Carolina as regulated by the NC Department of Justice.

The department consists of sworn police officers, patrol, investigations, administrative functions, functional authority positions, telecommunicators, and security guards.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

Sergeants serve in a first-line unit-level supervisory capacity, overseeing a team. Sergeants (at times in conjunction with a lieutenant) must manage schedules, evaluate direct reports, prepare, and recommend development plans, and provide coaching, discipline, and commendations as appropriate. Sergeants must be able to plan for a shift, make assignments, respond to questions from the public, and intake complaints. Sergeants are the first line of officer oversight to ensure compliance with policy, law, and local regulations.

Sergeants also must be prepared to support the unit in its duties carrying a case load, responding to calls, emergencies, and crimes, working special events, and other non-supervisory duties as necessary. Sergeants may also be assigned collateral duties based on their departmental role, such as evidence custodian if assigned to Investigations.

Sergeants may be assigned to patrol, investigations, or over another unit or squad. Sworn police personnel may be deployed/requested to assist in the field based on the operational needs of the department and may fulfill other law enforcement or administrative duties as assigned. Sergeants assigned to an investigation will be required to work an on-call rotation. Sergeants assigned to patrol will work regular patrol shift hours.

All sworn police officers are considered essential personnel for inclement weather and emergencies and may be required to work overtime depending upon the circumstances and special events.
