Public Safety Telecommunicator – Metropolitan Rates (Police Telecommunicator)
Job SummaryThis Telecommunicator position performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations. The role involves receiving emergency and non‑emergency calls, monitoring alarms, obtaining and relaying information, prioritizing calls/alarms, coordinating response procedures, dispatching appropriate public safety personnel, and maintaining public safety communications logs and databases.
Key Responsibilities- Receive and process emergency and non‑emergency calls using multi‑line phone systems and two‑way radios.
- Monitor alarms, listen for radio traffic, telephone calls, and fire alarms, and communicate information to the appropriate officer.
- Prioritize calls/alarms and coordinate response procedures with dispatch and field units.
- Obtain and relay detailed information to assigning officers, including typing daily reports, memos, and the Police Bulletin.
- Maintain public safety communications logs and databases, including the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) Computer Terminal.
High School diploma or equivalency. Demonstrated possession of the necessary competencies to perform the work. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification within one year of employment.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience- Knowledge of law enforcement agency operations, particularly dispatch.
- Effective oral communication and public‑facing skills.
- Typing proficiency essential for daily reports, memos, and the Police Bulletin.
- Ability to rapidly check files and accurately read written orders and messages arriving through the DCI Computer Terminal.
Certification as a DCI computer operator. Once hired, the Telecommunicator must attend a re‑certification class every two years to maintain certification.
Work ScheduleRotating schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. 40 hours per week. 12 months per year.
Benefits and CompensationCompetitive salary in the $43,627 – $48,220 range.
