Summary
This position reports to the Controller and serves as a member of the Controller’s Office leadership team. The role requires expert knowledge of federal and state tax regulations and is pivotal in ensuring compliance and strategic planning for the organization’s tax-related functions.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to tax inquiries, conduct thorough research, and advise management on tax planning strategies and their financial implications.
- Develop, deliver, and maintain multi-level training and comprehensive documentation for campus units.
- Ensure accurate preparation and submission of all required tax forms, returns, and financial reports for the organization.
- Coordinate with the Payroll Department for payroll-related reporting and compliance.
- Stay informed about changes in tax laws and regulations, communicate their impact, and implement updates to organizational policies and procedures.
- Identify activities and transactions that expose the organization to tax risks and recommend and implement policy or process changes to mitigate these risks.
- Collaborate with internal departments (Payroll, Human Resources, Purchasing, Office of General Counsel, Student Accounts, International Programs) to address tax implications for independent contractors, employees outside North Carolina, non-U.S. citizen employees working in the U.S., and foreign national students.
- Perform treaty analysis for foreign nationals to ensure correct federal withholding and reporting.
- Advise and assist departments such as Athletics, the Office of General Counsel, the Chancellor’s Office, and the Provost’s Office on tax-related matters.
- Oversee the application and maintenance of sales tax exemptions and demonstrate leadership in continuous improvement and staff development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance or related discipline with 12 accounting credits and three years of professional accounting experience (at least one year in supervision); or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional accounting coursework. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience- MBA, master’s in accountancy, or other relevant degree
