Job Description

This entry‑level training position is designed to develop an inexperienced candidate to accurately evaluate options and design safe, cost‑effective, and reliable distribution facilities for residential, area lighting, basic facilities, and simple maintenance projects. Incumbents are expected to receive extensive on‑the‑job training and shadowing to develop basic skills and expertise in power distribution design and technical tasks, and are expected to advance to Power Engineering Technologist I or a similar position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Learn, practice and promote all safety policies and procedures 100% of the time.
  • Learn client and/or company policies and procedures for the development of site designs for electrical distribution facilities to serve a variety of customer needs.
  • Prepare site drawings and construction sketches for various installations of electrical facilities in a cost‑effective manner that maximizes safety and service reliability.
  • Prepare job packages, including material estimates and requisitions, for the prepared distribution electrical designs.
  • Evaluate the loading of various equipment components being installed such as transformers or fuses to ensure a cost‑effective, safe, and reliable design.
  • Maintain accurate records and files and update the appropriate client systems with accurate data entry.
  • Support both company and client business goals and expectations while representing themselves positively and professionally.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications
  • Regular attendance is required.
Education and/or Experience
  • Required:

    High school degree or GED.
  • Preferred:
    Associate’s degree (AA or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school).
  • 0–1 year experience in a technical field or GIS/CAD is preferred; no experience is required but experience in the utility field is desirable.
On‑the‑job Training

Incumbent will be involved in extensive on‑the‑job training and shadowing of more experienced employees to develop the required skills and expertise.

  • Read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals and operational instructions.
  • Write simple correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings to customers, clients, and other employees.

  • Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; apply units of American money and weight, volume, and distance.
  • Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic algebra and geometry to practical situations; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; read and interpret spreadsheets.

  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
