Overview
The Assistant Director of Transition (ADT) in the Center for Academic Advising (CAA) is part of a collaborative team promoting student success through transitional support programs and advising efforts supporting holistic student development. The ADT reports to the Director in the Center for Academic Advising and is responsible for planning and implementing the Center for Academic Advising's role in the advising and registration process for new CAA students, both freshman and transfer students.
The ADT creates and implements training in various modalities for stakeholders, identifies student learning outcomes and the needs of campus participants, and stays up to date on best practices through assessment and research to ensure training reflects university needs. This work involves effective communication, collaboration, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders, including Transition Programs, Admissions, the Office of the Assistant Provost for Academic Advising (OAPAA), OAPAA Business Office, and CAA team members.
The ADT will support advising services by coordinating spring and summer orientation sessions, managing the Pre-Orientation Course Registration process, advising First-Year Spring Admits, coordinating Group Advising efforts, and serving on assigned task forces or committees, while providing direct advising services as needed to support the Center for Academic Advising’s mission.
- Coordinate spring and summer orientation sessions and the Pre-Orientation Course Registration process.
- Advise First-Year Spring Admits and coordinate Group Advising efforts.
- Develop and deliver training for students and campus offices involved in advising and registration processes, identifying outcomes and stakeholder needs.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to support transitional student services and advising.
- Provide direct advising as needed and participate on task forces or committees as assigned.
- Master's degree and 5 or more years of related work experience in a university/college setting, with at least 3 years of increasing responsibility within higher education related to academic advising experience and/or orientation programming.
- Experience in planning, executing, and/or leading others through complex processes involving data, large groups of students, and families.
- Experience with and passion for working with and advising students from varied backgrounds in both face-to-face and distance education (e.g. online) environments.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational skills and demonstrated commitment to high quality customer service.
- Experience with and/or ability to utilize and/or learn various advising and software applications, learning platforms, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Starfish, Degree Plans, Zoom and technology-based advising delivery systems.
- Experience supervising, managing and evaluating employees within an evolving and complex organization.
- Demonstrated experience effectively working in a complex and evolving matrix organization.
- Experience working with early career students (first-time freshman and transfer students).
- Experience planning and coordinating student support services and programs such as orientation and group advising; works positively and effectively as a team member.
- Proven track record for effective advising, coaching and communication skills with a diverse student population.
- Program development, implementation and evaluation experience with strong attention to detail.

The Center for Academic Advising supports all incoming freshman, undeclared transfer students, Isaac Bear Early College High School students enrolled at UNCW, and non-degree seeking undergraduate students until they become eligible to declare a major. The Center for Academic Advising develops and implements co-curricular programs that support a student’s successful transition to college and enhance retention. Students are advised by a team of professional advisors who work with campus staff and faculty to enhance student intervention strategies and increase learning and success.
