Lecturer - Criminology

Overview

The Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington seeks to hire a lecturer in criminology starting August 2026. This is a nine-month non-tenure track position with a teaching load of four courses per semester. There may be opportunities for additional summer school teaching. Some asynchronous online instruction is expected, and instructors must be available to teach on-campus courses in Wilmington.

This is a fixed-term, one-year position that is renewable, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and funding availability. The university provides opportunities for promotion to higher non-tenure track ranks for eligible instructors. The successful candidate should have potential for innovation and leadership in teaching and service and will teach undergraduate courses, direct undergraduate student research as needed, provide service to the Department of Sociology and Criminology, and stay current with developments in the field.

We seek an individual who complements our strengths and supports our department's commitment to public and applied criminology.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses (on-campus and asynchronous online as needed).
  • Directing undergraduate student research as needed.
  • Providing service to the Department of Sociology and Criminology.

Minimum Education and Experience

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in criminology, criminal justice, sociology, or a closely related field at the time of application.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Ph.D. in criminology, criminal justice, sociology, or a closely related field at time of application.
  • Experience teaching online and in-person introductory and upper-level courses in criminology and sociology, particularly in law and society.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and fostering student learning.
  • Potential for innovation and leadership in teaching and service.

The Department of Sociology and Criminology ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) at UNCW has 28 full-time faculty members, over 350 undergraduate majors, and offers BA degrees in sociology and criminology (general and public), including an online BA in criminology, and a Master of Arts in sociology and criminology.

College/School Information

The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) houses 14 departments and offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including bachelor's, master's, and related interdisciplinary programs. CHSSA emphasizes applied learning and interdisciplinary opportunities and describes its mission and offerings in detail to support student development and success.
