Overview
The Department of Art & Art History at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a nine‑month, non‑tenure‑track lecturer in 3D foundations, beginning in August 2026. This is a one‑year appointment that is renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. The university provides opportunities for promotion to higher non‑tenure‑track ranks for eligible instructors.
The position requires an active teaching agenda and carries a 4‑4 teaching load. The candidate will primarily teach 3D foundations, with secondary teaching in other foundation areas. The position includes possible opportunity for additional summer school teaching. Instructors must be available to teach on‑campus courses in Wilmington.
Responsibilities include teaching, mentoring students, and providing service to the department, college, and university.

Primary Function of Organizational UnitThe Department of Art & Art History is comprised of 15 full‑time and 5 part‑time faculty. The department offers B.A. degrees in Art History, Digital Arts, and Studio Art, and hosts a range of exhibitions in the CAB Art Gallery. The department facilities include 11 dedicated studios in sculpture, ceramics, painting and drawing, printmaking, photography, graphic/digital art, and foundations.
The faculty, curriculum, facilities, and additional art offerings support the department's mission: to cultivate aesthetic decision making through creative problem solving, critical and analytical thinking, and an understanding of the importance of visual arts in the human experience.
College/School InformationThe College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration, as well as combined bachelor’s/master’s programs in Spanish and English.
CHSSA also houses the Gender Studies and Research Center and the Academic Resource Center, which offers full‑service professional advising for all CHSSA undergraduate students.
CHSSA offers interdisciplinary minors and post‑baccalaureate certificates in areas such as Africana studies, American studies, Asian studies, classical studies, conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, Hispanic studies, journalism, Latin American studies, medical humanities, Middle East and Islamic studies, Native American studies, professional writing and publishing, science and medical writing, and women's, gender, and sexuality studies.
CHSSA contributes significantly to the curriculum that comprises UNCW's University Studies Program, providing all undergraduates with a foundation in the liberal arts and transferable skills for life in the twenty‑first century. Graduate programs in CHSSA prepare students for careers in business, industry, government, teaching, or further doctoral study.
Applied learning is a hallmark of the student experience in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. Each of CHSSA’s departments requires an applied learning experience as part of the curriculum for its undergraduate majors, including faculty‑directed research, internships, service learning, and capstone courses and projects.
