The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS) in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the state's coastal university, invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 2026.
We seek an expert in applied geodesy, geophysics, and/or remote sensing who applies innovative methods to measure and interpret physical changes across Earth's land and ocean surfaces. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:
- Crustal deformation driven by tectonics, magmatism, isostatic adjustment, or dynamic topography
- Sea-level change and coastal and marine landscape evolution
- Subsidence, mass wasting, storm-driven change, and other hazards impacting land areas and ocean margins
We welcome candidates who integrate geological, geophysical, geodetic, and/or geodynamic methods, using tools such as satellite and marine geodesy, remote sensing, altimetry, seafloor and terrestrial GPS networks, or numerical modeling.
The ideal candidate will develop a robust, externally funded research program and successfully advise graduate students. The candidate will demonstrate a strong record of effective teaching and be comfortable instructing courses at the introductory, upper division, and graduate levels. Course topics can include field- and laboratory-based research methods and courses in the candidate's area of expertise.
The position carries a full-time 3:2 teaching load of 15 contact hours per academic year. The candidate is also expected to attend departmental faculty meetings, participate in undergraduate and graduate committees, engage in service to the department, university, profession, and community, and actively assist in efforts to increase visibility, student participation, and enrollment in the department's academic programs.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsA Ph.D. in Earth and Ocean Sciences or a closely related discipline is required at the time of appointment. Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered if the expected Doctoral degree is conferred by August 1, 2026.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & ExperiencePreference will be given to candidates who have the following qualifications:

Primary Function of Organizational UnitThe Department of EOS offers B.S. in Geology and Oceanography, M.S. and B.A. in Geosciences, B.A. in Geography and Geospatial Science, and a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science. Ph.D. students can be advised through the Center for Marine Science Applied Coastal Ocean Sciences program. EOS maintains an outstanding record of research and scholarship and provides powerful undergraduate and graduate student experiences that include applied learning, field studies, and mentored research.
UNCW provides extensive analytical facilities in support of research and teaching, including spaces for petrology, optical microscopy, sedimentology, geospatial analysis, electron microscopy, stable isotope mass spectrometry, and DNA facilities. The UNCW Center for Marine Science hosts small and large watercrafts, a dive shop, machine shop, and instrument shop.
The College of Science and Engineering offers programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, mathematics, and B.S. and M.S. in mathematics.
Additional programs include 2+2 in engineering; 3+2 in computer science and electrical or computer engineering; physics and electrical engineering; and post-baccalaureate certificates in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science.
