Overview

What We Offer The Dispatcher plays a critical role in supporting safety, security, and emergency operations across Novant Health facilities. This position serves as a central communication hub, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate resources, monitoring security and life-safety systems, and providing outstanding customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external partners. The Dispatcher operates in compliance with Novant Health policies, regulatory standards, and service excellence principles.

Responsibilities
  • Operations & Communications
    • Answer emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from throughout the facility and health system.
    • Dispatch appropriate resources via radio communications, email, and emergency notification systems.
    • Maintain accurate call logs, incident reports, and documentation within the RMS reporting system.
    • Monitor CCTV systems, record activity, and report suspicious behavior.
    • Monitor and respond to panic alarms, call boxes, emergency telephones, and infant abduction (HUGS) alarm systems.
    • Operate and monitor telephone and two-way radio systems to relay information and dispatch officers, plant operators, and other personnel in a timely manner.
    • Monitor and manage elevator systems, including security lock-outs and emergency situations.
    • Monitor emergency generator power systems and fire alarm systems; acknowledge, announce, silence, and report alarms as appropriate.
    • Acknowledge and coordinate response to STAT codes and other emergency situations.
    • Monitor, acknowledge, transmit, notify, and document activity within the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) system.
    • Receive, record, and document subpoena services from outside agencies.
    • Support inclement weather notifications and response efforts.
  • Security, Property & Access Control
    • Manage access control requests, including key issuance, tracking, inventory, and reporting.
    • Maintain master key inventory and distribute keys as authorized.
    • Maintain and inventory patient valuables, including controlled substances brought from home; contact owners regarding property left after discharge.
    • Receive, secure, document, and return lost and found patient valuables; contact owners of abandoned property.
    • Distribute parking permits and manage parking citation processing.
  • Administrative & Support Functions
    • Perform administrative duties including reports, data entry, and retrieval of information across multiple computer systems.
    • Ensure timely resolution of events to reduce organizational risk and liability.
    • Assist with training new employees and police officers on dispatcher-related duties.
    • Maintain compliance with the Security Management Program and applicable standards.
  • Customer Service & Professional Collaboration
    • Provide walk-up customer service to vendors, visitors, staff, and patients.
    • Maintain professional rapport with internal departments and external partners, including local and state law enforcement, medical examiners, healthcare facilities, and professional organizations.
    • Perform all duties in a professional manner while demonstrating teamwork, accountability, communication, and compassion.
    • Uphold Novant Health’s principles of service excellence and contribute positively to patient satisfaction.
Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    High School or GED required. 2 Year / Associate Degree or experience in related field preferred.
  • Experience
    :
    Minimum of one year in an emergency communications center, law enforcement (officer dispatcher) or healthcare environment, preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification
    :
    • FOR Special Police (8070):
      Valid NC drivers license, preferred.
    • Certification on DCI system required within 1 year.
    • Notary Public certification, preferred.
