Position Summary

The Director of Media Relations is responsible for shaping and executing the company’s media strategy to strengthen brand reputation, elevate company visibility, and support key business initiatives. This role leads all proactive and reactive communications with the press, develops strategic messaging, oversees media outreach, and builds strong relationships with journalists, reporters, and industry influencers. The Director will work cross-functionally with Leadership, Brand, People, and Communications teams to ensure alignment and consistency of the company’s external voice.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive media relations strategy that aligns with company goals and brand identity.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization when needed.
  • Advise executive leadership on media opportunities, risks, and best practices.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key members of national, regional, and local media.
  • Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media statements, talking points, and executive communications. Manage inbound media inquiries and coordinate timely, accurate responses.
  • Secure earned media opportunities across TV, print, digital, radio, and podcasts.
  • Lead external communication efforts during high-visibility or time‑sensitive events.
  • Develop crisis response messaging and protocols in partnership with Legal, HR, and Executive teams. Monitor brand sentiment, public perception, and emerging issues.
  • Identify compelling company stories and transform them into media‑ready narratives.
  • Partner with creative and marketing teams to support campaigns, launches, events, and social initiatives. Oversee production of press kits, media briefs, thought leadership content, and award submissions.
  • Drive media strategy for major company events, philanthropic initiatives, and announcements.
  • Coordinate interviews, media tours, and press engagement for executives and subject matter experts. Ensure brand consistency across all external touchpoints.
  • Track media coverage, competitive landscape, and industry trends.
  • Measure the impact of PR initiatives and provide regular reporting to leadership.
  • Recommend improvements to optimize visibility and reputation.
Qualifications
  • Proven track record securing national and regional media coverage.
  • Strong relationships with journalists, editors, producers, and influencers. Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.
  • Ability to distill complex information into clear, compelling messaging. Experience developing crisis communication strategies.
  • Confident public speaker with the ability to represent the brand effectively.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using media monitoring tools.
  • 7–10+ years of experience in media relations, public relations, external communications, or related fields.
  • Experience with in high‑growth, consumer‑focused, or brand‑driven organizations.
  • Prior leadership or team management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.
