DEFINITION

Work on the R/V CAPE HATTERAS during the ship’s student training voyages and in port periods maintaining the vessel and keeping the vessel clean. Assisting Deck Utility Crewman and Scientific Technician with training and working on technical issues when needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
  • Receives general supervision from Ship Captain and essential deck personnel during deck operations
  • Exercises supervision of students during deck operations and cleaning duties during training cruises. In port periods supervision of work study students.
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

Essential Functions
  • Clean ship's mess area after each meal and as needed.
  • Clean tables after meals.
  • Assist cook in cleaning the galley after each meal.
  • Keep inside and outside decks clean and free of grease and dirt.
  • Remove trash from containers and store in a proper manner. Remove standing water on inside decks that could create a safety hazard.
  • Load and unload gear and secure gear in a safe manner.
  • Help with lines while docking and getting underway.
  • Chip and remove rust and prepare metal for painting, using hand, electrical or pneumatic tools.
  • Assist in the application of ship protective coatings while in port
  • Assist in standing a bridge watch if needed.
  • Assist as directed

  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge
  • Shipboard sanitation practices.
  • Be able to identify safety hazards and correcting those hazards.
  • Be able to recognize problems with equipment onboard such as leaking water, dripping oil and different sounds equipment might make while in operation.
  • Performing stock control, help keep inventory of paper and cleaning supplies.
  • Basic ship maintenance related to corrosion and protective coatings
  • Use of hand, electrical and pneumatic tools and their applications on a ship
  • Basic English usage, spelling and grammar.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
Ability To
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Understand and follow written instructions
  • Go to sea for extended periods of time
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to:
  • Cleaning solutions, solvents and paints in a moving environment.
  • Hand and power tools in a moving environment.
  • Difficult working conditions involving wet decks, cold and hot temperatures.
    • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  • Making observations
  • Reading and writing
  • Communicating with others
  • Operating assigned equipment
    • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
  • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Operating assigned equipment
  • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Working in harsh weather conditions
  • Loading ships stores and scientific gear
  • Participate in drills and emergency situations
  • Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 75 pounds
    • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:

  • Responding to questions
  • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities
  • EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Minimum Education /Training
    • High school diploma or equivalency.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, U.S. Merchant Mariner's Document for entry level positions.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Transportation Worker Identification Card
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain US Passport.
    Minimum Experience
    • Documented work experience underway at sea, preferably in the deck department.
    Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills
    • Prefer working experience with hand and power tools.
    • Prefer experience of working on vessels dockside.
    • Prefer experience on research vessels deploying and recovering scientific gear.
