Job Description

Nemours is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead (Chemistry) to join our laboratory team in Wilmington, Delaware. Primary function of the lead medical laboratory scientist is the performance of a variety of analytical procedures of moderate to high complexity, using manual and automated methods, and through a variety of clinical laboratory methodologies. In this function, the lead must be able to perform and provide oversight of all required calibration, quality control, statistical calculations and other process control and mathematical functions.

The associate must also be able to understand and educate on concepts such as linearity and standard deviation, as they apply to the performance of analytical testing in a clinical laboratory.

  • Routinely performs a range of clinical analysis in the molecular department by properly utilizing a variety of methodologies and instrumentation according to laboratory policies and procedures and in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements.
  • Assists in the development and/or takes the lead in the validation of various complex tests for implementation in all sections of the laboratory. Helps with administrative duties including writing and maintaining procedures, assigning, and completing proficiency testing, and maintaining supply inventory as needed.
  • Orders, accessions, statuses, and reports results of tests performed on patient specimens, monitoring a variety of critical clinical issues such as patient identifiers, specimen quality, and order appropriateness. The lead must be able to read and understand a variety of written material such as specimen requisitions, worksheets, patient identification, specimen requirements, and act appropriately. Monitors pending logs regularly to provide rapid turnaround time.
  • Operates, calibrates, and performs troubleshooting and maintenance on laboratory equipment following established procedures and as assigned by supervisor. Must be responsible for laboratory equipment performance, interacting with technical representatives for instrument maintenance, both preventive and repair, and performing start‑up and shutdown of complex analytical equipment. Recognizes the need for additional quality control, maintenance, or specimens prior to releasing test results.
  • If specifically trained and assigned to the specimen collection, processing, and handling section, collects or assists with specimens from patients or others in special procedures (e.g., assisting physicians at bone marrow aspirate collections). Such collections may take place in a variety of environments and may require entry into patient isolation rooms, where infection control procedures must be followed.
  • Transports and handles specimens as assigned, ensuring delivery follows appropriate procedures.
  • Handles supply and inventory issues as required, identifying key technical parameters (lot numbers, storage requirements, etc.) and following laboratory section inventory procedures. Retrieves supplies and equipment from storage areas as needed and places orders for reagents and supplies as directed.
  • Answers telephone as assigned and interacts routinely with a variety of individuals, including physicians, other clinical staff, patients and families, inspectors, vendors, etc., demonstrating good customer service by answering promptly, referring calls appropriately, and calling critical results.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Clinical Lab program or a Science‑related program required.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience required.
  • Nationally/Internationally recognized certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent (ASCP, AAB or AMT) required.
