Overview
DEFINITION: To teach courses in Veterinary Assistant to inmates at the correctional institution. To develop and update curriculum and prepare educational material for courses, provide classroom instruction to students through lecture, demonstration, and laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions and testing. Courses to be delivered on ground.
Supervision- Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the Director of Special Programs.
- May occasionally receive general supervision from full-time instructional staff.
- Receives facility rules/procedures and process direction from prison staff.
- Exercises no supervision.
- Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to Vet Assistant students.
- Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
- Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
- Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery.
- Develop laboratory assignments to provide hands-on experience as appropriate.
- Ensure that all instruction given to students including lectures, tests, demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and service projects follow the technical direction of the Program Coordinator.
- Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide tutoring outside of the classroom as needed.
- Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change.
- Attend faculty meetings as required.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance.
- Maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
- Stay abreast of new developments and changes in the academic field(s).
- Participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
- Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to the required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines.
- Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.
- Assess the relevance and impact of various lessons and revise and improve lesson format when necessary.
- Evaluate various textbooks and select books to be used for future classes.
- Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate.
- Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
- Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
- Safety in the Workplace.
- Current trends in the academic area.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including Right to Know regulations.
Ability to:
- Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, communicating with others, operating assigned equipment, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including standing or sitting for extended periods, operating assigned equipment, preparing and presenting instructional material, and bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Maintain mental capacity to make sound decisions, respond to questions, and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Minimum Education /Training- Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a related field OR at least 5 years working as a Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician.
- Experience working in a veterinary office, as a dog groomer or in a dog grooming facility, and/or as a dog trainer.
- Teaching experience.
- Two (2) years teaching experience.
- Experience in the basics of dog grooming.
- Experience in dog training and behavior.
- Courses will be taught at Pender Correctional Facility, 2-3 days per week.
- Courses will be taught in the evening.
