- High school diploma; and satisfactory work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must possess a valid ND Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within 180 days of employment and maintain a motor vehicle record compatible with the City’s insurance company’s criteria.
- Prior work experience operating and maintaining equipment and vehicles.
- Must become certified in areas as required by regulatory agencies through in-house training or City of Williston arrangements.
- Acquire all licenses and/or certifications currently required, or as may be required, by regulatory agencies.
- Ability to perform the duties of this classification.
- Prior work experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicle and/or heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and small engine systems.
- Willing and able to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Able to work in and support a teamwork environment.
- Strong computer skills with ability to effectively utilize programs such as the Microsoft suite and to learn new programs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Training opportunities available to obtain desired certifications for incumbents who have met the minimum certificate, license, and registration requirements.
Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, standard operating guidelines, operations and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language effectively.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables.
CommunicationsRegular contacts within the department and City of Williston, third parties, outside representatives, community groups, and mutual aid partnerships as needed.
Use of Equipment and/or ComputersRegular use of technology and equipment for job-related functions will be required, including but not limited to computers, phones, and printers. Operation of heavy and light equipment, department vehicles, mowers, front end loader, snow blower, snowplow, ARFF Fire Truck, and other assigned equipment is expected. The position may involve exposure to non-hazardous and hazardous chemicals, fuels, greases, degreasers, paint thinner, cleaning supplies, oils, lubricants, antifreeze, battery acid, solvents, and other materials used in vehicle maintenance.
PhysicalDemands
This is primarily a manual labor classification. The employee will stand, walk, and move between areas, and may drive to various locations. Regularly required to pull, push, reach, bend, kneel, crawl, and operate equipment. Vision requirements include near, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception. The employee must be able to move, lift, carry, and manipulate up to 100 pounds.
