Position: Engineering Technician I

Summary: Performs a variety of complex professional engineering drafting, inspection and investigation work.

Supervision Received: City Engineer, Assistant City Engineer, Operations Engineer

Supervision Exercised: None

FLSA Status:Non-Exempt

Essential Job Functions:

  • Use CAD equipment and software to prepare comprehensive plans.
  • Plot easements, districts, legal descriptions, dedications, right-of-way changes, and annexations.
  • Create charts, drawings, plans, profiles, cross-sections, maps and other graphic aids.
  • Assist in maintaining infrastructure records.
  • Review plats submitted to the City.
  • Assists in the basic design and final review of drawings for public works projects.
  • Prepares preliminary and final specifications and estimates; conducts investigations and makes reports on engineering project problems; prepares a variety of reports relating to various public works projects; gathers, interprets and prepares data for studies, reports, plans and specifications.
  • Confers with supervisors, technicians, and other interested parties to become familiar with the scope of engineering assignments in order to recommend the best and most appropriate solution or conclusion; provides technical advice to supervisors; analyzes data and makes recommendations.
  • Performs engineering duties relative to construction and improvement of public works projects including research, design, estimates, field layouts and assisting in surveying and inspections.
  • Assure assignments are performed within budget; assure effective use of budget funds, materials, facilities, time, etc.
  • Assists with field inspections, permits and surveys.
  • Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.

    Minimum Qualifications: Working knowledge of city and state traffic laws. Working knowledge of common hazards and safety precautions necessary for light equipment operation. Ability to work at arduous tasks for sustained periods of time in all types of weather conditions. Ability to perform minor preventive maintenance as required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

    Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

    Experience: One-year experience in engineering, construction, or a related field. OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Necessary Special Requirement: Valid North Dakota driver’s license; insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.

    Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.

    Equipment Used in Job Performance: Computer, utility locating equipment, vehicles, survey equipment, materials testing equipment, hand tools.

    Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and taste or smell.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
