First Team Head of Performance and Sports Science – Wigan Athletic
Location:
Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom
- Lead, oversee and coordinate the Club’s first team performance functions, ensuring that leading performance is achieved, maintained and exceeded through effective delivery of a continuous performance strategy.
- Design, plan and implement a performance, health and wellness strategy.
- Identify and define areas of improvement in existing operations.
- Where appropriate, advise on and implement new and innovative strategies linked to team performance aligned with the Club’s goals, targets and KPIs.
- Maintain an effective, collaborative and continuous relationship within the Football management team to ensure best practice methods and continuity.
- Provide regular and timely updates to the Coaching staff on the status of the players’ health and wellness.
- Coordinate the multi-disciplinary performance, health & wellness and players.
- Applied Research:
Ensure the performance trajectory of the players is positively impacted by contemporary research and innovation initiatives. - Understand and manage risk/compliance requirements; ensuring that the department abides by regulations and activities in scope and is compliant at all times (e.g. Premier League, FA and UEFA regulations).
- To manage staff professional development and performance up-skilling programs. Drive operational efficiency and effectiveness by identifying opportunities for improvement, establishing measurement and KPI’s where relevant.

- University degree in Sports Science, Physiotherapy, Sport Medicine, Sports Management or alternative sports science/business-related discipline or any other degree combined with high-level sport management experience.
- Understanding of strategic high-performance sport system planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
- Proven experience in high-performance sport is required, including demonstrable success at a senior level and relevant high-performance experience.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills combined with proven sport management.
- Open, transparent, respectful, ethical and fair approach and behaviour.
- Ability to perform under pressure and respond calmly to competing demands.
- Highly motivated and committed to quality.
- Act with a high degree of integrity and confidentiality, whilst representing the values of the Group.
