HIGHWAY & CONSTRUCTION LABORER ($4,000 Hiring Incentive)

Hourly: $18.19 - $24.45

Job Summary

If you enjoy working outside in beautiful Arizona we have a great opportunity for you! ADOT has an exciting opening with our signing and striping team. This team maintains signs and roadway striping for the Northern part of our state. Some of the skills required for this position include equipment operations, roadway and general safety training, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and inspect signs and delineation on all state routes including large interstate signs.
  • Install new signs, marking and delineation.
  • Respond to accidents to assess and repair roadway features.
  • Typical shift: 4/10 hours work days.
  • Offer eligible tuition reimbursement.

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public.

Positions will be assigned based off of experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties by Classification
  • Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14, $18.19/hr):
    Entry level; responsibilities include operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care, landscape care, roadside shoulder restoration, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care.
  • Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17, $20.46/hr):
    Apprentice classification; trained to perform more advanced duties including the same core tasks, plus additional responsibilities as required.
  • Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18, $22.45/hr):
    Intermediate level; responsible for a broad scope of intermediate level highway operational duties and/or lead responsibilities. Duties include scheduling, assigning, overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training, and guiding staff.
  • Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19, $24.44/hr):
    Full journey classification with high level superintendent responsibilities including all duties of the lower grades plus additional supervisory tasks.
Qualifications
  • 6 months of roadway/highway experience for the Worker; 1 year for Tech 1; 2 years for Tech 2; 3 years for Tech
    3. Experience may include operating motorized vehicles, heavy-duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement maintenance, tunnel maintenance or landscape care.
  • Must obtain Arizona CDL Class A within 90 days from hire and be licensed within 6 months for the Worker; CDL with manual or automatic transmission and (N) tanker endorsement required for Tech 1-3.
  • Register with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and allow ADOT to conduct limited queries on the CDL.
  • Position responds to emergency call outs 24/7; must reach maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push or pull 50 lbs.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and pass all required training and record checks for state business use of vehicles.
