Recreation Leader

As a Recreation Leader
, you will be the driving force behind creating vibrant, engaging, and inclusive recreational experiences for community members of all ages. This role offers a dynamic opportunity to coordinate, lead, and inspire participants in activities spanning sports leagues, special events, and educational programs at Recreation Centers, Athletics fields, Tennis Centers, and Watson Park. You will assist with planning, organizing, and delivering programs that promote health, creativity, and community spirit.

Whether setting up sports fields, officiating games, overseeing facility operations, or providing outstanding customer service, you will be pivotal in ensuring a safe, fun, and welcoming environment. This entry-level, limited part-time role provides flexibility, hands-on experience, and the rewarding satisfaction of enriching the lives of others through recreation and community engagement.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the coordination of recreation programs including adult and youth sports, special events, and other recreational activities.
  • Responsible for the preparation, set-up and clean-up of baseball, softball and soccer fields.
  • Perform a variety of general administrative duties including: answer telephones, assist customers, collect fees, and maintain attendance records.
  • Promote the safety of all program participants.
  • Assist with the set-up and take-down of tables, chairs, and sports equipment for all facility activities and special events.
  • Oversee the regular operations of a community center, fields, and gymnasium facility.
  • Respond to patrons' needs for assistance and information in person and over the phone.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including personal computer.
  • Officiates or keeps score for sports activities.
  • Perform basic custodial duties.
  • Sets up and takes down building furnishings and arrangements.
  • Completion of work assignments may require operation of a vehicle.

Qualifications
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with program participants.
  • Ability to organize and lead recreation activities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the public.
  • Ability to maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and a variety of computer software.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment, and/or supplies required for the assigned activity up to 25 pounds.
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain Child First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • May require ability to work outdoors in unpleasant weather conditions.
  • May require ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds and windy conditions.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.
  • An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Six (6) months of customer service experience.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
Preferred Experience and Training
  • Six (6) months of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Six (6) months of experience with facility operations such as setup and breakdown of equipment, sports field preparation, and basic custodial tasks.
  • Participation in recreational activities (e.g., youth sports, arts, fitness programs) demonstrating familiarity with recreational environments.
  • First Aid and CPR certification

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of a criminal record check.
