Position: Aquatics Lifeguard I (Part-Time)

Overview

Lifeguard 1 (City of Wichita) — entry‑level seasonal role focused on safety and customer service at city pools. Monitor pool areas, respond to emergencies, enforce safety rules, assist with swim lessons, and support basic pool maintenance. This role helps build lifesaving skills, work experience, and teamwork while serving the community.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor assigned recreational pool area to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions and practice preventative lifeguarding.
  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies.
  • Enforce all City of Wichita Parks pools policies and procedures.
  • Assist with Swim Lessons and participate in regular in-service training.
  • Assist in cleaning the facility and related areas and operation/maintenance of pool equipment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned that do not interfere with lifeguard responsibilities (patron safety).
Requirements
  • Ability to listen to, read, interpret, and apply instructions.
  • Ability to lift empty containers weighing up to 50 lbs to a height of 4 ft.
  • Ability to lift and move large, sometimes bulky objects weighing up to 80 lbs with assistance.
  • Ability to climb steps or ladders.
  • Ability to move about quickly and stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop or squat, as needed to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work outdoors in unpleasant weather conditions.
  • Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances and windy conditions.
  • Ability to climb onto and sit on a lifeguard tower for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to physically perform lifeguarding activities, including techniques of swimmer rescue.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
