Job Purpose/Summary

This role is for an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to design and deploy real-time embedded systems supporting RF, SDR (software-defined radio), and multi-sensor platforms. You will develop and integrate digital signal processing (DSP) and embedded software solutions for mission-critical sensing and communications systems.

You will work alongside hardware, FPGA, RF, and software engineers to build production-grade, real-time embedded systems operating in constrained and performance-sensitive environments. This role includes hands‑on ownership of embedded development, system integration, and technical mentorship, while helping bridge conventional signal‑processing and estimation approaches with modern machine learning methods where appropriate.

This is an individual contributor role with significant technical responsibility across architecture, implementation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain software for SDR and RF systems, including real-time signal acquisition and processing pipelines.
  • Implement and optimize DSP algorithms (e.g., filtering, detection, estimation, spectral analysis, synchronization) for embedded and low-latency environments.
  • Develop firmware for microcontrollers and embedded processors, including peripheral drivers and communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, etc.).
  • Design and implement sensor fusion and state estimation algorithms for multi-sensor systems operating in real time.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware and FPGA engineers to define system interfaces, partition functionality across hardware/software boundaries, and optimize overall system performance.
  • Support integration and testing of SDR platforms, including I/Q data handling and streaming architectures.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions that bridge traditional DSP and controls-based methods with emerging ML-enabled approaches.
  • Perform profiling, debugging, and performance optimization of embedded systems to ensure deterministic, reliable operation.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Document system design, interfaces, and technical decisions for internal stakeholders.
  • Complete other duties as requested.
Qualifications
  • Eligible to obtain a US Security Clearance – US Citizenship required.
  • Formal education in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, or a suitable mix of education and work experience.
  • Professional experience developing embedded software for real-time systems.
  • Proficiency and experience with low-level development.
  • Strong background in digital signal processing and estimation techniques.
  • Experience developing firmware for microcontrollers and/or embedded Linux systems.
  • Experience working closely with hardware and FPGA engineers in integrated system environments.
  • Experience implementing sensor fusion or state estimation algorithms (e.g., Kalman filtering or related approaches).
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred Requirements
  • Experience optimizing DSP implementations for constrained or heterogeneous compute environments.
  • Experience working with SDR platforms and RF systems, including I/Q data and streaming signal workflows.
  • Familiarity with RTOS environments and real-time scheduling concepts.
  • Experience bridging classical signal processing approaches with ML-based methods.
  • Background in wireless communications or digital communications theory.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical sensing, telecommunications, or security-focused systems.
Working Conditions

Employees may be called upon to participate in in-person meetings, trainings, or company functions at Knowmadics offices or other designated locations. Travel in support of business operations may also be required, and employees are expected to comply with these obligations as part of their position.

Physical Requirements

May include sitting or standing for extended periods, working with computers and technical equipment, and occasionally lifting or moving materials or tools.
