Position: START Family Mentor

Full-Time Essential Functions

  • Provides for the safety, stability and well‑being of children and families during the referral period
  • Delivers culturally competent services using a strengths‑based approach consistent with evidence‑based practice models
  • Meets DCF timelines to connect with the family and facilitate the initial family meeting
  • Engages and works in partnership with the case manager and family to complete assessments
  • Responds to calls and client emergencies as needed, including being on‑call and working some weekends and public holidays as necessary
  • Meets with clients at least once a week to offer one‑on‑one support
  • Develops recovery plans, coping methods and rehabilitation services with the client
  • Facilitates treatment assessments and referrals, and provides client support in arranging medical appointments, counseling, support groups and other resources as needed
  • Monitors the client’s behavior, schedule, medication and activities, and reports any unusual behavior, conflicts or recovery deviations to the relevant professionals
  • Provides transportation and resources and coordinates community support services as needed
  • Job may require the employee to be able to regularly drive to various DCCCA locations and other business locations throughout the day or night as required

Education, Experience, and Licensure
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Must have lived experience with substance abuse, treatment and recovery with a minimum of two years of continuous recovery
  • Requires knowledge of recovery resources and has experience interacting with individuals seeking recovery
  • Personal experience with child welfare preferred
  • Must possess a valid state Driver’s License, in‑force automobile liability insurance, and maintain a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets the organization’s insurability standard. Availability of reliable transportation is required for this position
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Overall computer knowledge and proficiency with:
    • Computerized database programs
    • Spreadsheet programs
    • Word processing programs
    • Computerized e‑mail systems
  • Ability to efficiently operate office equipment such as calculators, copiers, fax machines, telephones, voicemail systems, and scanners
  • Effective listening, oral, and written communication skills, including face‑to‑face, on‑site, in‑person discussions. Exercises appropriate use of positive language
  • Regular and predictable on‑site attendance
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Travel

This position requires travel, which may include driving personal or company‑owned vehicles. It may also include driving with other passengers in the vehicle, and/or driving as a passenger with other drivers.

Note:

Even with a valid driver’s license, certain motor vehicle infractions may render an individual ineligible to drive company‑owned or personal vehicles for company business. Such infractions may also disqualify employees from continued employment with DCCCA. This position is considered a safety‑sensitive position.
