NIAR Avionics Technician
Wichita State University - Wichita, KS
Job SummaryInitiates, leads, and performs functional tests, troubleshooting, and repair of avionics and electrical systems. Prepares aircraft for flight test and airworthiness certification.
Essential Functions- Performs inspection, makes adjustments and repairs, replaces components, and corrects any malfunction or deficiency with and without power applied to the aircraft.
- Performs maintenance on aircraft in accordance with applicable technical data and regulations.
- Accesses, re‑installs aircraft components that obstruct performance of assigned tasks.
- Performs basic mechanical and electrical removals and installations.
- Documents work performed per regulations.
- Coordinated with technical representatives, lab, and other personnel to resolve systems or component problems.
- Fabricates parts and/or wire harnesses and installs them per engineering specifications.
- Assists with engine removal and installation.
- Assists in development of installations for engineering.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- General Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Operators Radio Telephone License preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of safety and operating procedures for power‑on aircraft.
- Ability to use and interpret a variety of precision measurement instruments.
- Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and repair of aircraft systems.
- Ability to recognize potential electrical hazards to prevent injury.
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders and/or stairs.
- Ability to position self to place, construct, and/or maintain equipment and items in designated spaces.
- Ability to work in confined and elevated spaces.
- Ability to inspect work, materials, equipment, and/or supplies and identify errors or needs.
- Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially information, both receptively and expressively.
- Ability to remain in a stationary position.
- Ability to communicate with others and exchange information accurately.
- Ability to use tools, equipment, and technology necessary for the job.
- Dexterity in instrument manipulation.
- Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment, including phone, printers, copiers, and calculators.
In a hangar adjacent to McConnell AFB that once housed Boeing Air Force One modification facilities, the MRO team at NIAR WERX provides production design, initial and supplemental type certification, instrumentation installation, modifications, and field support/repair.
Qualification Requirements- Export compliance: this position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies; applicants must be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and meet the requirement of being a "U.S. Person".
- Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude, and proficiency with tools.
- Ability to fabricate parts and wire harnesses according to engineering specifications.
